Last week’s Notebook contained news of Section titles conferred in the Sac-Joaquin, North Coast, and Central Sections, with Division 5 in the San Diego Section and Division 7 of the Southern Section thrown in for good measure.
This report recaps all other championship finals, plus shares information about the first two rounds of regional play.
Carlsbad, St. Augustine lead SDS champs
Carlsbad won its third section title in school history, downing defending champion Torrey Pines in a five-set Open finale on Saturday.
Carlsbad won the first two sets but needed to rally after the Falcons won the next two. The Lancers jumped out to a 4-1 lead in Game 5 on a Roman Payne stuff block and got a stuff block and four kills in the set from Derek Bashford in the decisive 15-4 win.
Payne, a 7-1 middle, finished with 14 kills and three blocks. Fellow middle Oliver Doty contributed 13 kills and Bashford finished with 14 kills and three blocks.
Torrey Pines, which was 0-2 versus Carlsbad in the regular season, had 17 kills and three aces from Ben Soudak. Declan Ferguson added 13 kills in the loss.

St. Augustine swept its way to the Division 1 title over Mission Vista, avenging a regular-season loss. The Saints, who were 9-10 at one point in the season, won their 12th match in the last 13 efforts behind 11 kills and three aces from freshman Noah Pabarcus.
Caleb Petsche had nine kills to pace Mission Vista.

Clairemont won its first section title ever by downing La Jolla in four sets in Division 2. Makoa Miner led the way for the Chieftains with 13 kills and three blocks. Ben Salmon led La Jolla with a match-high 17 kills.

Mater Dei Catholic won the last two sets over Maranatha Christian to take home the Division 3 title in four sets.
Adrian Trevino had 14 kills and Oskar Manguy-Meza added 11 for the Crusaders, who won a title in their first trip to the championship match.
CJ Hays had 22 kills, including 11 in the second set Maranatha Christian won; to pace the Eagles, who were also making their first championship match appearance.

Fallbrook lost Game 1 of the Division 4 final to High Tech Mesa and faced three set points in Game 2 before rallying to win its first title in program history.
Setter Gabriel Palacios and hitters Aiden Way and Joshua Robertson keyed the victorious Warriors.
Justin Farmer had a big match in the loss for High Tech Mesa.
State and national No. 1 Mira Costa hangs on in Southern Section
Mira Costa won its ninth Southern Section title, but first since 2021, by holding off Huntington Beach in five sets in Division 1 on Friday.
The Mustangs appeared poised to win the match in four sets, but Huntington Beach fought off four championship points and eventually forced a fifth set, which Costa won, 15-11.
Opposite Grayson Bradford had 25 kills, including the match clincher, to lead Mira Costa. Sophomore OH Mateo Fuerbringer added 17.
Logan Hutnick and 22 kills and Kai Gan contributed 53 assists for the Oilers in the loss.

Mater Dei won its first title since 2011 by downing Peninsula in four sets in Div. 2. The Monarchs lost the first set before dominating the final three behind junior OH Ben Smith, who had 19 kills and 12 digs. Jeremiah Potasi, Dylan Gallagher, and Jack Jadon combined for 34 more kills, Junior setter Jake Newman finished with 47 assists and 12 digs.
Drake Harris led Peninsula with 15 kills. The Panthers were seeking their second section title all-time after winning in 2019.

Tesoro swept Orange Lutheran on Saturday to win Division 3, the second title for the Titans since 2022.
Tesoro rallied from down 15-8 in the third to win in extra points to complete the win in three.
Junior pins Max Draper and Carson Hatch led the winning effort with 13 kills each. Sophomore Cash Summers contributed 32 assists.
Seniors Connor Engelbrecht and Logan Busch had 13 kills apiece for OLu.

Sage Hill won a second Southern Section title in a row on the road on Saturday. The Lightning, who won Division 5 last year, needed five sets to down host Santa Barbara for the Division 4 title.
Sage Hill rallied from down two sets to one to win behind Jackson Cryst, who dominated in the late stages.
Hayes Costner and Benicio Duarte had 12 kills each to lead Santa Barbara.

Kennedy of La Palma won its first Southern Section title, downing Esperanza in Division 5 on Saturday afternoon. The match went four sets.
Kennedy lost the first set at deuce and fought off four set points in the second to square the match before taking control behind senior MB Seth Sainz and senior OH Logan Benda. Benda finished with 17 kills.
Senior OH William Preston had 22 kills and fellow senior outside Tyler Lemmon added 16 in the loss.

El Toro defeated Quartz Hill in four sets Saturday to win the Division 6 title, its first. The Chargers were just 1-23 two seasons ago but prevailed behind a senior-dominated lineup.
Senior Ryan Lim led the way for El Toro with 24 kills and 14 digs. Senior setter Moses Kim added 52 assists.
MB Joseph Bonner was a standout for Quartz Hill in the loss.

After starting the year 2-11, Wildwood won its 14th match in a row to sweep to the Division 8 title over Katella on Friday. Senior OH Matthew Matuszak led the way.

California Academy of Math & Sciences won its first section title, sweeping Calvary Chapel of Downey in Div. 9.
Senior Alfredo Lopez had 10 kills, 10 digs and 16 assists for CAMS in the win. Junior libero Jayred Raymundo contributed 12 digs and four of the team’s 10 aces.
Luke Neff played well in the loss for Calvary Chapel.
Seniors lift ECR to LA City title
El Camino Real’s run to Los Angeles Section Open Division title went first through Chatsworth, a league opponent the Royals had lost to twice before; and finally through top-seeded Venice. The four-set win made ECR City champs for the first time since winning Div. I in 2016.
Tyler Lee, one of 11 seniors on the 12-man squad, led the way with 14 kills. Dev Vunnam, Christian Romero, Jackson Riepe, and Connor Koski, the team’s lone underclassman; combined for 31 more.

Taft captured its seventh title, but first since 2015, with a sweep of Carson in Division I.

Izac Garcia was a catalyst as Valley Academy of Arts & Sciences (VAAS) won its first-ever title, in four over Mendez, in Div. II.

East Valley swept past Maywood CES to win Div. III, the Falcons’ first title in boys volleyball.

Hamilton repeated as City Section champion. The Yankees, who endured a seven-match losing streak heading into the playoffs, beat Port of Los Angeles in five, 15-10 in the fifth, in the Div. IV final. Hamilton won Div. V last year.

Wilson of Los Angeles won in the City Section
Wilson of Los Angeles won its first title in Div. V by beating Harbor Teacher in four. The Mules lost the first set. But won the second, 29-27, to spur them on to victory.
In that second set, Wilson led by 10 before Harbor Teacher went on an 11-point run to take a 21-20 lead. Harbor Teacher held set point to go up 2-0, but Jose Reyna’s line shot knotted matters at 24-24. Setter Elias Tenorio and OH Santiago Rojas took over the set with key points to send Wilson up, 28-27. Jay Yeung finished off the set with a monster block.
Wilson won the final two sets, 25-14, 25-17, to clinch the title. Rojas was the Player of the Game, with 17 kills, 12 digs, and five blocks.
Mitty breaks through in the CCS
Top-seeded Archbishop Mitty won its first Central Coast Section title in 12 years by defeating league rival Saint Francis of Mountain View in four sets Saturday night in the Open Division.
William Dryden had 22 kills as Mitty improved to 4-0 over the Lancers this year.
The Monarchs hadn’t been to a section final in a decade before Saturday, but are in the midst of a historic season, even as head coach Lacey Gera departed mid-season on maternity leave and assistant Gregg Gallegos stepped in to keep the team headed in the right direction.

Leigh repeated as Central Coast Section champion with a much younger team
Leigh won its second straight Div. I title in a five-set thriller over Branham. The Longhorns were much younger in 2025 than the senior-dominated group that took the crown last season, but the results were the same despite only one returning starter.
Cooper Smith had 226 kills and Henry Chen chipped in with a dozen to lead the way for Leigh. Eric Wu contributed 44 assists.

Harbor won its first CCS title by sweeping Monta Vista in Div. II. Setter Eddie Weaver orchestrated a diverse offense that saw Josh Rejfir, Cooper Lastition, and Noah Luksich combine for 43 kills.
Pratham Kannan and Ayan Deshpande played notably for the Matadors in the loss. Monta Vista had been seeking its fourth CCS title over the past several years.
Lincoln logs crown in SFS
Lincoln swept Balboa for the fourth straight time to win its first San Francisco Section title since 2019.
Bulldog mentality propels Oakland Tech
Oakland Tech had been 0-3 versus Oakland, but the Bulldogs won the first set on Saturday and used it as a springboard for the four-set win.
Making a bracket
One day after the final section title was determined, CIF State unveiled its brackets for the Northern California and Southern California Regionals.
Four divisions. Sixteen (16) teams per division, divided equally between North and South.
Play commenced Tuesday and continued yesterday. The 64 teams that qualified for regional play had been whittled down to 17 (Harker and Clovis East will play their regional semifinal today).
In the North, Archbishop Mitty will take on the winner of Harker/Clovis East for the Div. I title.
Ryan Barnes had 39 assists on Tuesday as the Monarchs won three close sets from Oak Ridge. Mitty (39-2) swept Clovis last night. Clovis knocked out Northgate on Tuesday.
Harker is in the Division I semifinals after a sweep of Folsom on Tuesday. Clovis East swept Saint Francis of Mountain View to reach that stage.

Buchanan and Del Oro of Loomis will meet for the Division II regional title.
The Bears have earned sweeps over West Park and Los Gatos. Del Oro ended Harbor’s season with a home sweep, then defeated Amador Valley, 3-1.
Del Oro has four players, three of them underclassmen, with 200 or more kills: Hunter Larkin, Jayden Steel, Grayson Holcomb, and Hayden Yarnes.
Los Gatos reached the regional semis with a 3-1 win over San Francisco Section champion Lincoln. Sam Slover had 14 kills for the Wildcats. Amador Valley got there with a 3-1 win over Clovis North. Three of the sets in that match went to deuce.

Branham avenged a loss to Leigh in the Central Coast Section Division 1 finale to advance to the NorCal Regional final in Division III.
The Bruins evened the season series at 2-2 by winning in five sets. The key moment came in the fifth when Pasha Znamerovsky blocked a Leigh attack to make it 7-4 Bruins. They went on to win, 15-11.
Branham defeated Sac-Joaquin Section Division 3 champion Ripon Christian in a Tuesday quarterfinal. Leigh used 25 Cooper Smith kills to get by Washington of Fremont.
International of San Francisco also made the regional finals after a sweep of Christian Brothers and a 3-1 win over Monta Vista. International is on a 16-match winning streak.
Monta Vista advanced to the regional semifinal by edging Redwood of Larkspur in five behind 21 combined kills from Charlie Jiang and Praneel Shah.

Oakland, runner-up from the Oakland Section; and Livingston, runner-up in Division 4 of the SJS playoffs; will meet for the regional title in iv. IV after each won regional semifinals over section champs. Oakland swept Ben Holt College Prep, the team that beat Livingston. Livingston defeated Oakland Tech, the team that beat Oakland.
Ben Holt defeated Benicia, 3-0, on Tuesday to reach the semifinals. Oakland swept Balboa. Oakland Tech used 27 kills from Adam Edlin and 20 from Vince Burke Pulsipher to win a five-set thriller over Albany. Livingston swept out Berean Christian.

In the South, Mira Costa and Huntington Beach will meet for the Division I title eight days after the two went the distance for the Southern Section crown in Division 1, with Costa prevailing.
Costa swept both Beckman and Newport Harbor. Huntington Beach needed four sets to dispatch both Redondo Union and Corona del Mar.
Newport eliminated San Diego Section Open Division runner-up Torrey Pines on Tuesday. CdM took out Carlsbad, the SDS Open champion, the same night.

In Division II, Mater Dei is onto the regional final after a 3-1 win over St. Augustine and a sweep of Classical Academy, both San Diego Section foes. Jeremiah Potasi had 25 kills in the win over St. Augustine. Ben Smith’s 14 kills led the Monarchs past Classical. Classical had beaten Los Angeles Open Division champion El Camino Real to advance.
Mater Dei will take on a third San Diego Section team, Francis Parker, for the Division II title on Saturday. Parker defeated Venice in four on Tuesday behind a diversified offensive attack, 13 digs from libero Ethan Bigger, and four blocks and three aces from 6-9 sophomore middle Kevin O’Brien. The Lancers then won a marathon match last night over Canyon Crest Academy, 15-13 in the fifth. Miles Custer led the way with 28 kills, outdueling Andrew Chen, who had 30 for CCA.
CCA reached the regional semifinals with a Tuesday five-set win over Tesoro.

In Division III, Sage Hill and Clairemont will square off for the regional title.
The Lightning have won regional preliminary matches over Sanger West and Taft by 3-1 scores.
Clairemont beat VAAS in five sets on Tuesday, then did the same to Santa Ynez last night. Manoa Miner, Sam Reedholm, and Gabe Tocco combined for 37 kills for the Chieftains in the Tuesday win.
Santa Ynez had reached the regional semifinals with a sweep of El Toro. Kennedy got there by beating Kennedy of La Palma in four sets.

The Division IV finalists are Mater Dei Catholic and Wildwood.
Mater Dei Catholic, from Chula Vista, swept both CAMS and Brea Olinda in regional prelims.
Wildwood swept East Valley on Tuesday, then edged Fallbrook in five yesterday.
Fallbrook reached the regional semis with a win over Hamilton. Bear Olinda made the semis with a win over Wilson of Los Angeles.

The inaugural CIF Boys Volleyball State Championships are May 30-31 at Fresno City College in Fresno.
