About this week’s statewide top 25…
Los Alamitos outlasted Redondo Union. Redondo got revenge for an earlier loss to Palos Verdes.
This created some, but not a lot of, movement in the top 25, as the teams that lost had done enough previously not to drop too far. As for Los Al, an early-season loss to Santa Margarita Catholic limits the Griffins’ ability to rise beyond the Eagles in the absence of more in-state signature wins.
Clovis stunned Clovis North.
Ordinarily, this would cause North to drop precipitously, as Clovis is unranked with five losses outside the top 25. Clovis North had beaten Clovis three previous times, however. Couple that with Clovis’ strong showing in getting to the final at the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions on Saturday and the Broncos’ loss didn’t cause them to drop too far.
Folsom did beat St. Mary’s of Stockton on Saturday at the Christine Craft Memorial in El Dorado Hills. This win put the Bulldogs into the top 25 ahead of the Rams and brought Rocklin, which defeated Folsom in four sets less than two weeks before, back into the top 25.
Oaks Christian also re-appeared after sweeping Thousand Oaks, a team it previously lost to.
These results forced Pleasant Grove, which dropped a match to Oak Ridge; San Marcos of San Marcos, which lost three times last week, including once to San Dieguito (a team it split with); and Chaminade, which fell to Marymount; from the top 25. These teams did not drop too far, however, and will be candidates for the rankings again soon.
Rams hone their Craft
St. Mary’s of Stockton ended up winning the Christine Craft for the second straight year. Sophomore power hitter Mckenna McIntosh finished with 58 kills over 11 sets. Freshman Rachel Nemee and senior Bella Gutierrez were key contributors on defense and led the team in digs. McKenzie Dobbins dished more than 20 assists in three consecutive matches to aid the tournament win.
The Rams were able to advance to the final when Folsom, which defeated them in pool play, 15-11 in the final set; pulled out in the semifinals. The Bulldogs took a forfeit so that the girls on the team could attend homecoming that night.
“Lesson learned,” said coach Devin Elmore. “I won’t be scheduling a tournament on homecoming ever again!”
Lancers continue their surge
Saint Francis of Mountain View was supposed to be building this year after graduating three superstars from last year’s team. Well, the build has happened faster than expected. The Lancers beat Clovis in four sets on Saturday to capture the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions for the second straight year. Lake Merchen’s team is 16-3 on the season, with wins over top 25 teams Redwood of Larkspur, Marin Catholic, Archbishop Mitty, and Saint Ignatius. Saint Francis, led by libero Noe Vanacht, setter Riley Barulich, and middle Ella Fulton, is 16-3 on the year, with losses only to No. 6 Branson and out-of-state powers Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas and Assumption of Louisville.
A win of Giant-ic proportions!
Redwood stood tall in its title at Sonoma Valley
Redwood of Larkspur downed San Ramon Valley to win the Sonoma Valley Tournament on Saturday.
The Giants played without kill leader Maddy Wagner, but still prevailed behind RS Neeva Gaine, who was named MVP after hitting .444 on the day with 25 kills. Freshman OH Milan Hendrickson and MB Hanna Smith also were productive and prolific on attack, while OH Logan Leverte led in both digs (36) and aces (11).
Here, there and everywhere
The last major tournaments of the fall season take place this weekend and will have the state’s top teams in action jockeying for placement in the top 25 as well as seeding in the upcoming section playoffs, which begin in little more than two weeks in the Southern Section.
At the Stockton Classic, the top site, which consists of 12 teams starting in four pools of three, includes Saint Francis of Mountain View, Rocklin, Folsom, and St. Mary’s of Stockton. State-ranked Archbishop Mitty, Saint Ignatius, and Marin Catholic also are in the field, along with region-ranked Pleasant Grove, Christian Brothers, San Ramon Valley, Oak Ridge, and Foothill of Pleasanton.
This field is so deep and would have been deeper still had Branson and Redwood of Larkspur not dropped out. The teams are fairly evenly matched. Anyone could emerge Saturday afternoon with the title.
The team with the most riding on this event probably is Rocklin. The Thunder are 25-3 this year and their only two in-state losses have come at the hands of Foothill. Revenge in Stockton – a possible bracket play match-up – would go a long way towards re-establishing Rocklin as the team to beat in NorCal, which was the prevailing thinking to start the year.

In the South Bay of Southern California, the Redondo/Mira Costa Power Classic boasts Bishop Gorman from Las Vegas and a slew of powerhouse teams from Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego counties, including the two host schools, Sierra Canyon, Torrey Pines, Los Alamitos, Palos Verdes, and Thousand Oaks. I have been public in stating my opinion that Sierra Canyon might be the best team in the South by the end of the year, but have a hunch that Torrey Pines will find its stride here and be the team that, in August, I predicted would top the state.

State No. 1 Mater Dei and No. 3 Marymount, two more SoCal powers, will skip the Power Classic in favor of the Nike Tournament of Champions – Southwest in Phoenix. The ToC field also has 15 other California teams, including Santa Margarita Catholic and one-loss James Logan; plus elite Arizona squads Xavier College Prep and Casteel, undefeated Jesuit from Oregon, and national top-five Cornerstone Christian from San Antonio.
Mater Dei and Marymount could reprise their final from the Durango Fall Classic two weeks ago but will have to navigate several potential land mines to get there.
Carnival atmosphere at Campbell Hall
Campbell Hall, the reigning California Div. II state champions, hosted state No. 2 Sierra Canyon last Saturday in a one-of-a-kind event in the Golden State: an outdoor volleyball match played on the Vikings’ football field.
This was Campbell Hall's Homecoming. Beyond the field was a carnival complete with a Ferris Wheel!
Sierra Canyon swept the match behind 11 kills from Hanna Mcginest and 22 assists and five kills from Lucky Fasavalu.
News and notes…
Two Inland Empire coaches recorded career win No. 300 last month. On Sept. 10, Paloma Valley upended Ontario Christian to give coach Stephen Kass his 300th against the team that beat it in back-to-back Southern Section finals in 2018 and 2019.
Less than three weeks later, on Sept. 28, Ontario Christian's Paige Liebhart notched No. 300 at the Freeway Games as the Lady Knights defeated Roosevelt to win the title.
Thanks to Derryl Trujillo from the Press-Enterprise for the scoop!

Junior McKenzie Anderson (5) went over 1,000 career digs this past week for James Logan. That's a lot!
Reigning Mission Valley MVP McKenzie Anderson, a junior OH at James Logan, surpassed 1,000 career digs last Thursday in a home win over Moreau Catholic. Anderson has more than 200 kills and more than 200 digs this year for the 20-1 Colts.

The Sierra Foothill League, consisting of eight teams in the Sac-Joaquin Section, saw Rocklin go 8-0 and Whitney 0-8. Outside of league play, no team finished with a record under .500 and, in the stacked league, no team defeated any other that finished ahead of it in the league standings.

Coronado is 28-3 and ranked in the South Region. The Islanders have won 16 matches in a row and have not lost since the last day of August. Included in the current streak was the title at the La Jolla Invitational in mid-September, when Coronado outlasted The Academy of Our Lady of Peace, 31-29, 25-16, in the championship match behind 14 kills from freshman Ashlynn Proctor and three kills and a team-high four blocks from fellow frosh Emily Albin.

West Valley of Hemet is in the midst of the best season in school history. The Mustangs are 19-2 in matches played to at least two sets and undefeated in the Mountain Pass League after Wednesday’s four-set win over San Jacinto. Junior setter Deonys Ioane recorded 31 assists in the match and currently sits at 486 on the season, which is within shouting distance of the school record of 520. That record was set in 2018 by Madison Hubbell, whose younger sister, junior OH Kamryn Hubbell, is West Valley’s kills leader as well as one of the top servers on the team.

Windsor continued its strong season by going 4-1 at the Sonoma Valley tournament last weekend. The Jaguars lost to San Ramon Valley in the semifinals. Senior Brielle Galli was chosen from Windsor for the All-Tournament team.
Windsor followed up this week with tough wins over Ukiah and, last night, over Cardinal Newman to remain atop the North Bay-Oak League standings.
***
Marlborough sits 19-5 and first in the Angeles League after Saturday’s 3-2 win over Harvard-Westlake. The Mustangs are riding a 13-match winning streak.
***
Sophomore OH Korynn Mayo had a monster match for Marina on Sept. 24, but her 32 kills were not enough to help the Vikings overcome Newport Harbor. The Sailors, who are now 17-7 on the year, are improving daily according to head coach Andrew Mabry, and spreading the offense around among Ella Olson, Piper Coady, Vladimira Kotzakov, Sam Fleischli, and Sadie Henderson.
***
Bishop Diego was undefeated heading to the Santa Barbara ToC but has now lost three of its last four matches after suffering a major injury at the tournament.
***
The 20 aces recorded on Sept. 4 by Buena Park freshman Eleanor Kailiponi may not only be a school record but also a state record. The mark appears to be the best ever reported to the National Federation of High Schools, which keeps national records in volleyball.

Huntington Beach honored its seniors in match this past week. The state-ranked Oilers are 27-3 on the season
