Mixed bag

In last week’s Notebook, we told you about the Southern Section playoff runs of Bishop Diego and A.B. Miller.

Bishop Diego has made it all the way to the championship in Div. 3 after the Cardinals took out Cypress in four sets behind Eliana Urzua (28 kills and four solo blocks) and Karina Urzua (36 assists and 11 digs).

Bishop Diego’s opponent is Long Beach Poly. The Jackrabbits rallied from two sets down in the other semifinal to stun Windward. Libero Sydney Mercado was a huge factor for Poly, especially behind the service line. Poly (27-12) will take a nine-match winning streak to the final.

In Div. 8, A.B. Miller of Fontana’s magical run ended in the semifinals to a Garden Grove that out-served the Rebels. Before this year, Miller was 0-9 all-time in post-season play dating back to the school’s opening in 1991. The good news for Miller is that, by reaching the semis, it will be in the field when the SoCal Regional Tournament begins play on Tuesday!

About this week’s statewide top 25…
The big issue early in the week was how to order the top SoCal teams after Mater Dei.

Last week, we had Los Alamitos second, Sierra Canyon third, Marymount fourth, Mira Costa fifth, Cathedral Catholic sixth and Redondo Union seventh.

Then, while Cathedral Catholic was roaring into the San Diego Section Open Division final, the other teams were embroiled in the last round pool play on Saturday, some playing for a spot in the Southern Section Division 1 final; the rest for seeding in the SoCal Regionals starting next week. Redondo beat Los Al, Mira Costa rallied to beat Mira Costa. Marymount took care of business against Temecula Valley.

Here's the order I settled on and why:

2. Sierra Canyon
3. Marymount
4. Costa
5. Cathedral Catholic
6. Redondo
7. Los Al

Sierra Canyon won Pool A despite losing to Costa. The Trailblazers had to win just one set to clinch a berth in the finals and won two of the first three before falling in five. They get the nod over Costa despite the loss because they won the sets that mattered most on Saturday, they beat Marymount three straight times while Costa is 1-2 over the Sailors.

Marymount is next because of that 2-1 edge over Mira Costa. The Sailors also are 1-0 versus Cathedral Catholic and 1-0 versus Redondo.

I have Mira Costa over Cathedral Catholic, even though they did not play, and the Dons have a better overall record than the Mustangs. Costa has that win over Sierra Canyon and generally more quality in-state wins than Cathedral Catholic does. The Dons do have a win over Mater Dei, but it was early in the season, when the Monarchs were not at full strength. Both teams have multiple wins over Torrey Pines, so that was not a differentiating factor. This was a close call and could have broken either way.

Redondo comes next. Saturday’s win over Los Alamitos makes the Sea Hawks 2-1 over the Griffins; thus the edge.

Los Alamitos drops to seven with that one loss and despite owning a win over Sierra Canyon.

The Griffins have had a truly remarkable year and could have stayed at No. 2 in the state despite going 1-2 in Pool B. But Sierra Canyon’s three wins over Marymount, Marymount’s 2-1 edge over Costa, Costa’s two wins over Redondo in Bay League matches (which offset two tournament losses to the Sea Hawks) and Redondo’s 2-1 edge over Los Al, including the most recent contest; established the order I went with.

It certainly could have gone another way and will likely change again during Regional play.

The other result with the potential to roil the rankings came on Wednesday when unranked Saint Ignatius rallied from down two sets in a semifinal to reverse sweep Archbishop Mitty, the top seed in the Central Coast Section’s Open Division.

Careful scrutiny of Mitty’s record, including three previous wins over Ignatius; plus the fact that the loss did not eliminate the Monarchs from the Northern California Regional Tournament, helped me draw the conclusion that, while Mitty should fall behind Saint Francis of Mountain View, which won its semifinal; the Monarchs should not fall too precipitously.  They are, after all, 2-1 against Saint Francis. I slotted them at 15, behind Marin Catholic, Rocklin and Palos Verdes.

Looking at results last night from the state top 25…
No. 22 Clovis North won its first Central Section title, sweeping perennial power Clovis West in Division I. The two teams had split the season series, 1-1, but Clovis North used strong hitting from Ava Rogers and Kennedy Lingenfelter to take the first two sets, then rallied from behind in Game 3 to sweep. The Broncos clinched the title on a block from middle Chelsea Haydock.

The championship was the first as coach for Lauren Winslow, who is in her second year at North. Winslow won the Section as a player for Clovis West.

In other Thursday action
The Central Section crowned five other champions on Thursday, including Central Region No. 23 Central Valley Christian in Div. II. CVC was state runner up in Div. IV in 2022.

Bullard (D-III), Fresno Christian (D-IV), California City (D-V) and Woodlake (D-VI) also prevailed.

In the San Francisco Section, favored Lincoln swept Lowell to capture its 10th title all time. The Mustangs, ranked No. 14 in the North Region, were undefeated all year in the Section, including beating Lowell three times. In the 41-year history of the San Francisco Section championships, Lincoln or Lowell has won 39 of them. Lincoln’s win last night denied Lowell its 30th title.

The Central Coast Section conducted semifinals in all but the Open Division. In Division 1, Salinas toppled Central Region No. 25 Branham to advance to face Central Region No. 19 Homestead, which got by Carlmont.

In Division 2, Aragon defeated 2023 Division I state champion Valley Christian of San Jose in one semifinal. The Dons will take on Central Region No. 18 Monta Vista on Saturday for the title. Monta Vista knocked off Westmont in three straight.

Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep, No. 15 in the Central Region rankings, defeated Santa Cruz to reach the Div. 3 final. The Fighting Irish will meet Soquel, which outlasted Capuchino.

Central Region No. 20 Harbor and No. 21 Sacred Heart Prep will vie for the Div. IV title after wins over Scotts Valley and Notre Dame Belmont, respectively.

Finally, in Div. V, Crystal Springs Uplands will take on either Central Region No. 22 Summit Shasta or University Prep Academy of San Jose for the championship. Crystal won the state Div. V crown a year ago.

Title time
Over the next two days, Section titles will be decided in almost 50 divisions. Here are the most compelling:

Friday – San Diego Section – Eastlake, new to the South Region top 25 and in Division 1, takes on Rancho Bernardo

Friday – San Diego Section – University City, which stunned Coronado in a Div. 2 semifinal; takes on resurgent La Jolla Country Day.

Saturday – San Diego Section – state No. 5 Cathedral Catholic and No. 10 Torrey Pines clash for the Open title. Cathedral Catholic has dominated the Falcons so far this year.

Saturday – Los Angeles Section – top two seeds Taft and Venice meet to decide the Open champion.

Saturday – Southern Section – Mater Dei and Sierra Canyon, the state’s top two seeds, play for the Div. 1 title.

Saturday – Southern Section – state No. 14 Palos Verdes and No. 16 Murrieta Valley are set to determine the Div. 2 champion. PV has appeared in the last two Div. I state championships.

Saturday – Southern Section – two resurgent teams, Bishop Diego and Long Beach Poly, will play with the Div. 3 title on the line.

Saturday – Central Coast Section – state No. 11 Saint Francis of Mountain View takes on league foe Saint Ignatius. SI reached the final by upsetting top seed Archbishop Mitty, 16-14 in the fifth, in semifinal play.

Saturday – North Coast Section – state No. 8 Branson and No. 12 Marin Catholic compete for the Open Division title.

Saturday – North Coast Section – Tamalpais and Campolindo, ranked Nos. 12 and 13, respectively, in the North Region, are in the final in Div. 1.

Saturday – Sac-Joaquin Section – state No. 13 Rocklin and No. 17 St. Mary’s of Stockton meet in Div. 1. St. Mary’s is making its third straight trip to the title tilt, while this is the fifth straight for Rocklin coach Bret Almazan-Cezar. He took Granite Bay to the championship match in 2021 and Lincoln of Stockton from 1997 through 1999 (with a “somewhat successful” stint at Archbishop Mitty in the Central Coast Section in between).

Saturday – Sac-Joaquin Section – state No. 21 Christian Brothers will try to win a Div. 2 title for retiring coach James Todd. The Falcons will need to go through North Region No. 24 Vacaville.

Saturday – Northern Section – Shasta and Foothill of Palo Cedro meet for the Div. 2 title. Foothill lost to Pleasant Valley in the final last year.

News and notes…
James Logan
fell in five sets to Marin Catholic in a North Coast Section Open Division semifinal, but not before two Colts made history. Mackenzie Anderson, who had 29 kills and 31 digs in the match, surpassed 1,000 career kills. Leann Jung, who contributed 59 assists, 19 digs and five aces, topped 2,000 career assists.

The match also saw James Logan freshman outside hitter Chelsea Branley accumulate a whopping 30 kills!

Krystal Rose Huff had 22 kills and 22 digs for Marin Catholic and starred when the match hung in the balance in the fifth set. Carolina Delaney added 28 kills, Raina Brady dished out 55 assists and Sierra Ellison had 20 digs and four aces.

***

Porterville
lost to Bullard in five sets yesterday in the Central Section Div. III final. The Panthers reached the final by sweeping Reedley in the semifinal behind 34 kills from Haiden Arbelo.

***

Campbell Hall, the 2023 Div. II state champion, has reached the Southern Section final in Div. 4. The Vikings downed Rancho Cucamonga in five, with a boost from freshman Kate Williams, who entered in the third set and helped shift the momentum.

***

Coronado’s historic season came to an end in the San Diego Section Div. 2 semifinals, when it fell to University City in four sets. The Islanders reached the final four with a dominating quarterfinal win over Patrick Henry, one of only three teams to beat them this season. Libero Avalon Haro and MB Emily Albin were standouts for Coronado in the win.

***

Redondo Union finished 2-1 in Pool B of the Southern Section’s Div. 1 thanks to a sweep of Los Alamitos. MB Taylor Boice hit over .700 in the win with 11 kills. Abby Zimmerman and Avery Junk also had strong efforts.

***

Palo Alto fell to Saint Francis of Mountain View in a Central Coast Section Open Division semifinal on Wednesday, but made the final four thanks to a thrilling quarterfinal win over Menlo-Atherton that went five. Paly had to rally from down 13-11 in the fifth and staved off two match points before winning, 16-14, on consecutive kills from Maura Hambly.

Hambly finished with 18 kills, 16 digs, three aces and two blocks. Mackenzie Zhou contributed 14 digs and eight aces and Sophie Mies added 43 assists.

Senior Sienna Morales had 20 kills for M-A.

Palo Alto and Menlo-Atherton are the only public schools teams ever to reach the Open Division semis in the section.  M-A did it in 2019; Paly in 2018 and again this year.

***

Campolindo reached the Div. 1 final in the North Coast Section by upsetting San Ramon Valley in five sets on Wednesday. The Cougars won behind 36 kills from 6-1 senior outside Aveya Stone, a Cal Poly recruit; and 58 assists from freshman setter Amelia Knutson.

***

Stanford recruit Kaci Demaria has been on fire for Palos Verdes during post-season play. The 6-4 senior, who starred as a sophomore when PV reached the state Div. I championship match; has 109 kills in four playoff wins in Div. 2 of the Southern Section playoffs leading to Saturday’s championship match with Murrieta Valley. She terminated 26 times on Saturday in the four-set semifinal win over Santa Margarita Catholic. Ireland Real had 24 kills in the loss for the Eagles.

***

Libero Lauren Dignan sparked Branson to a North Coast Section Open Division semifinal win over Foothill of Pleasanton. The Bulls, who hadn’t played in 12 days, also got terrific work from setter Celia Tomie.

***

Tamalpais
, the North Coast Section champs in Div. 3 a year ago; will play for the Div. 1 title on Saturday after sweeping Monte Vista of Danville in a semifinal on Wednesday. The Red-Tailed Hawks got 22 combined kills from Natalia Clifford and Natalie Stanford in the win, as well as 26 assists, four kills and two blocks from Emmeline Sandgren.
