Cathedral Catholic Mohs best
One week after placing second in Hawaii, Cathedral Catholic returned to the Mainland, fought off fatigue, and won the Dave Mohs Invitational in Orange County, defeating surging Mater Dei in a riveting final.
The tournament featured eight teams in the statewide top 25. All eight made the quarterfinals, but the Dons and Monarchs were left standing to play for the title. Behind MVP outside hitter Mae Kordas, and All-Tournament picks Sophia Johnson (RS) and Lauren Hanson (S), Cathedral Catholic prevailed, 25-14, 28-30, 16-14. OH Madyson McCarthy served an ace on match point for the clincher.
Mater Dei placed MB Emma Kingston and OH Preslie Saunders on the All-Tournament Team. The Monarchs passed and blocked at an elite level all tournament long and capped a week that began with a victory over Mira Costa, to snap a rare two-game losing streak for the defending CIF Open Division state champions, and included wins over St. Mary’s of Stockton and Huntington Beach. And, with the sit-out period for transfers ending today, Mater Dei will be full strength going forward with prolific sophomore OH Westley Matavao, a transfer from Orange Lutheran, joining the squad.
Mitty gets down to nitty gritty
Archbishop Mitty continued unbeaten on the year when it ruled a robust field at Saturday’s Spikefest Tournament hosted by Milpitas High. The Monarchs swept past fellow top 25 team Saint Ignatius in the final, 26-24, 25-21.
The final match was one of runs for both teams and it could have gone either way, said Mitty coach Jon Wallace.
Leyna Nguyen, a senior outside, played well in all phases for the victors, as did senior libero Nicole Macalintal.
Carol Manu was a standout in the loss and all tournament long for Ignatius.
Eagles dare to win NorCal Invitational
Berean Christian overcame an early loss to win a tough tournament in NorCal
Berean Christian survived a pool play loss to host American Canyon to win the NorCal Invitational tourney last weekend. Setter LeAna Cimarra, OH Marley Seelye, and libero Megan Rost were standouts for the Eagles, who beat Saint Mary’s of Albany in the final. Sasha Bartel and Kayla Phung were standouts in the loss.
St. Mary's College Prep looked sharp in finishing second to Berean Christian at the NorCal Invitational
Playing for Pride
Pitman rebounded from a five-set loss last Thursday to Ripon to go 8-0 on Friday and Saturday to win the Central California Classic. The Pride played St. Francis of Sacramento in the championship match and was throttled in the first set before rallying to win the next two.
It came down to pure grit, in the end, said Pitman coach Ariah Amini.
Down 12-10 in the third, senior setter Danica Zamora served successive aces to get Pitman even. Senior RS Mia Ngo came up with crucial blocks when needed, junior libero Aila Reich passed well under pressure and junior outsides Maryn Hall and Kayliyah Williams took the clutch swings to help the Pride (13-2) prevail.
About this week’s statewide top 25…
Cathedral Catholic makes another big jump this week all the way to No. 1 after winning Dave Mohs on Saturday. The Dons, who also beat top 25 Francis Parker in the days following Mohs, have lost only to Cornerstone Christian of San Antonio, a team ranked fifth nationally in the MaxPreps Top 25. Cathedral Catholic is eighth, the highest-ranked California team.
Three teams entered the top 25 this week. Marin Catholic joined the rankings on the strength of winning the East County Invitational on Saturday. That tournament featured three teams, Rocklin, Branson, and Carondelet, which were in last week’s statewide top 25.
Marin Catholic is paced by an exciting 6-2 freshman outside hitter, Carolina Delaney, who led the team in kills at the event. The Wildcats also feature hitters Krystal Rose Huff and Chloe Allcroft, setter Rania Brody, and libero Sierra Ellison.
Saint Francis of Mountain View, a perennial top 25 team and top four finisher in the CIF State Open Division the past three years, made the rankings after a five-set win over state-ranked Redwood of Larkspur, which had been unbeaten. The Lancers graduated five starters off of last year’s team, including three superstars, but I suppose it is true that powerhouse teams like this never rebuild but always reload.
Thousand Oaks is the last team into the top 25 this week. Also known as the “Lancers,” TO took advantage of a depleted Oaks Christian squad to win a local showdown in three sets. Oaks hadn’t lost in league play since 2019.
Thousand Oaks, which has lost only to Harvard-Westlake this year, is fueled by sisters, 6-2 junior OH London Halvorsen and 6-1 freshman middle Saylor Halvorsen. The Halvorsens are daughters to mother, Carrie, who played at Thousand Oaks alongside her twin sister, Janie, in the 1990s. Both Carrie and Janie Penfield went on to play collegiately at the Division I level.
Looking at results last night from the state top 25…
No. 1 Cathedral Catholic continued to roll. The Dons swept three sets, two at deuce, over pre-season No. 1 Torrey Pines. Mae Kordas and Maya Evens led the way with 17 kills and 15 digs, respectively.
No. 3 Huntington Beach defeated another top 25 opponent, Newport Harbor, in three sets. Addison Williams had 15 kills and three aces for the Oilers. Taylor Ponchak added 11 kills and 14 digs. Olivia Foye contributed 17 digs and two aces and Amika Swanson chipped in with eight kills on 13 swings with no errors.
OH Abby Zimmerman and MB Taylor Boice sparked Redondo Union past former top 25 South Torrance in three.
Mira Costa, Los Alamitos, Archbishop Mitty, Palos Verdes, Oaks Christian, St. Ignatius and Thousand Oaks also won. Ignatius’ win was its second this year over Valley Christian of San Jose, the 2023 CIF Div. I state champion. Last night’s match was decided in five sets.
Players of the Week honors go to…
Here are some players recognized by local papers this week as their Players of the Week:
Simrin Adams, 5-9 Soph. OH, Long Beach Wilson – Adams was named POW by two publications after she delivered 21 kills to help the Bruins rally from two sets down to defeat Moore League rival Millikan.
Hannah Brady, 5-8 Sr. libero, Oaks Christian – The Michigan-bound senior surpassed 1,000 career digs this past week and has collected 12 or more digs in all but one match this season.
Lauren Furnald, 5-11 Soph. OH, Etiwanda – Furnald recorded double figures in kills and digs last week in two five-set thrilling wins over Centennial of Corona and Ontario Christian.
Mae Kordas, 6-3 Sr. OH/RS/MB, Cathedral Catholic – Yale-bound senior was named MVP of Dave Mohs Invitational as Dons won Orange County title for the third straight year.
Paityn Snow, 5-10 Sr. OH, Liberty Ranch – Snow averaged 15 kills and 11 digs per match in three wins last week.
Alina Stapf, 5-6 Jr. libero, San Marcos (Santa Barbara) – Stapf had seven aces and 20 digs to help the Royals sweep past rival Dos Pueblos.
Aubrey Tripp, 5-10 Jr. S, Pleasant Grove – Had 40 assists in a five-set win over always-tough St. Francis of Sacramento.

JSerra Catholic is a team we saw in the state top 25 before any matches were played. The Lions (13-6) have been very good at times (defeated Torrey Pines), but have lost six times, including three times to teams outside the state top 25. On Tuesday, the good team made an appearance as JSerra defeated San Juan Hills in four sets behind 22 kills and 28 digs from sophomore Katherine Nowak and 33 digs combined from Mikaela Brennan and Skylar Noble.
***
San Marin is off to a 12-1 start and has the chance to impress today in a match against Redwood of Larkspur. San Marin won the Lorenzo Invitational on Saturday behind MVP Brianna Nottingham, a sophomore; and fellow OH Sylvia Tuerke.
***
Redondo Union won a top-10 showdown this week by handing Sierra Canyon its first loss of the season on Tuesday. Abby Zimmerman put on a show for Redondo. Hanna Mcginest had a terrific attacking match in defeat for the Trailblazers.
***
La Canada got a hard-fought five-set win on Tuesday over host Village Christian. La Canada won the first two sets before Village Christian’s 13 seniors fought back to send the match to five in a sweltering gym. The Spartans pulled out the fifth, 15-10, despite playing with standout hitter Ashby Zubchevich ill and playing at about 60 percent.
***
Davis started 2024 10-0 but has since lost two of its last three, including to Granite Bay in three on Wednesday. Granite Bay is a young team with only three seniors on the roster. One upperclassman, OH Abigayle Gotwals, paced the Grizzlies in the win. 6-2 junior MB Alli Powell also placed exceptionally, coach Prima Glorioso told a local paper.
***
Bear River had 17 aces in a Pioneer Valley League sweep of Colfax on Tuesday. The Bruins (13-2) kept up their winning ways with a sweep of Oakmont yesterday. Junior Eden Cha is averaging four kills per set for Bear River.
***
Newport Harbor went 4-1 at Dave Mohs, beating JSerra and losing only to champion Central Catholic. Ella Olson and Samantha Fleischli led the front row while Emery Nichols and Ava Christiano took care of the back.
Newport followed up by winning Round 1 of the Battle of the Bay on Tuesday versus Corona del Mar.
Cookies for Payton Mabry and a win over rival Corona del Mar had everyone at Newport Harbor smiling
“The Newport gym was packed and the student section, ‘The Tar Pit,’ really showed up and the gym atmosphere was great, everything that this rivalry should be,” noted coach Andrew Mabry, who added that Tuesday also was his youngest daughter’s eighth birthday. Happy birthday Payton!

Marlborough (14-5) is on an eight-game unbeaten streak following successive wins over El Segundo and Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks this week. The team, coached by Nikki Holmes, also owns a win over Glendora this season. Glendora has beaten Etiwanda, which has beaten JSerra, which prevailed over Torrey Pines, so…you know…

Brooke Hansen (left) and Nina Hemsley were standouts for Etiwanda at the Whittier Classic
Etiwanda took third at the Whittier Classic this weekend. The Eagles (17-2) lost only to Orange Lutheran. Brooke Hansen and Nina Hemsley received All-Tournament honors for Etiwanda.

Foothill of Pleasanton shined at East County after a slow start to the year
Foothill of Pleasanton just completed a terrific week of volleyball. After starting the season 0-2, the Falcons are 7-1 since and this weekend made the final at the East County Invitational. They beat state-ranked Rocklin along the way behind a virtuoso performance from OH Kaycie Burdick. Other Foothill players contributing to its strong week included S/RS Paige Nelson, OH Kait Vogel, MB Lulu Hoenninger, and libero Olivia So.

San Francisco University captured the North Division at East County, quite an accomplishment for a program in a building year
University School of San Francisco won the North Division at the East County Invitational. This was quite a feat for a Red Devil squad that graduated all four of their primary passers and 75 percent of their swings from their exceptional 2023 team.
Season outlooks
In this part of the Notebook, we continue to look at the teams that completed pre-season forms with us at CIF State. Below is one more, the intriguing Bishop Alemany…
Alemany won 25 matches last year and made the top division of the Southern Section playoffs for the first time in school history. Five Div. I-bound players graduated from that team, which may account for the Warriors’ slow start to 2024, but reinforcements are coming in the form of transfer outside hitters Mia Stewart and Tristyn Bailey. Put those two together with returning superstar right side Alanah Clemente and add a couple of very talented freshmen and you have an offensive-minded Alemany team that should be very dangerous as early as next week.
